Who is a candidate for obesity surgery?
To be eligible for gastric sleeve surgery, patients must meet certain criteria. The first requirement is severe obesity. The patient's body mass index (BMI) must be 35 or higher. Patients with a BMI of 35 or higher are considered to have grade 2 obesity. This threshold is determined by the World Health Organization.
Individuals with a body mass index of 30 or higher who also suffer from weight-related problems such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea can undergo gastric reduction surgery under the supervision of a doctor.
Gastric sleeve surgery is not performed on patients who do not have weight problems but want to have surgery to look slim and toned.
Obesity Surgery, Gastric Sleeve Surgery: Age Restrictions
Patients aged 18-65 can undergo sleeve gastrectomy surgery. Individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 or higher, as defined by the World Health Organization, are eligible for the procedure.
Even if individuals under the age of 18 meet the specified criteria, the surgery requires specific approval. Parental consent is necessary for these individuals. Furthermore, they must undergo expert examinations and receive expert approval. For those whose mother or father has passed away, official parental consent is required.
