What are the requirements for gastric sleeve surgery?
Gastric sleeve surgery, like any surgical procedure, requires specific criteria. It is not recommended for complaints related to physical appearance or body measurements. The individual's health and body mass index (BMI) must be above European Union standards. According to these standards, a BMI of 30 and above is considered Grade 1 obesity, while a BMI of 34 and above is considered Grade 2 obesity, and gastric sleeve surgery may be performed to address potential health problems in this group. Individuals whose BMI is unsuitable for surgery may opt for other treatment methods.
Before undergoing sleeve gastrectomy surgery, the individual must have met the necessary exercise and nutritional weight loss requirements. Sleeve gastrectomy is considered suitable for patients who have been unable to lose weight through exercise and diet programs. Surgery is not recommended for those who have not tried these methods. The main reason for considering gastric reduction surgery is when a person's social and health problems are deteriorating due to their weight.
Gastric sleeve surgery is not only used in the treatment of obesity. It is also performed in cases such as type 2 diabetes, heart and liver diseases, and when there is a need to continue taking prescribed medications.

Age Limit for Gastric Sleeve Surgery
There are specific age restrictions for undergoing gastric reduction surgery. Individuals between the ages of 18 and 65 who are in good general health and have a body mass index of 35 or higher (considered grade 2 obesity) are considered suitable candidates for the procedure. In addition, parental consent is required for individuals under 18. For those whose mother or father is deceased, the surgery can be performed with the permission of a registered family member. Similarly, for individuals aged 65 and over, the surgery can be performed if necessary health checks are completed and no problems are found.
These factors alone are not sufficient for a person to undergo surgery. Conditions that do not pose a problem in terms of anesthesia must also be met.
What are the requirements for gastric sleeve surgery for those aged 65 and over?
For patients aged 65 and over, surgery can be performed if their general health condition is satisfactory. However, their body mass index (BMI) must be 35 or higher. For these individuals to be eligible for surgery, their excess weight must pose a health problem. Surgery will not be performed without the necessary examinations, regardless of the patient's wishes. After these necessary checks are completed, the individual can undergo surgery.
