How should people who have undergone gastric reduction surgery eat?
Anyone considering gastric sleeve surgery should obtain information about their diet and eating habits beforehand. How should people who have undergone gastric reduction surgery eat? There are certain dietary requirements and factors you need to consider before embarking on such a process. You must also be extremely careful after the operation.
In this article, we will find the answer to the question: How should those who have undergone gastric sleeve surgery eat?.
Liquid Diet as the Primary Diet
For the first 15 days after surgery, a diet consisting of liquid foods is required. Between two and four weeks, pureed foods can be consumed. The first three days after surgery are referred to as a "clear liquid" diet. The liquid foods consumed during this diet are as follows:.
- Compote
- Broth
- This
- Homemade Buttermilk
- Chicken Broth
- Light Teas
After the clear liquid diet ends, the liquid diet should be continued for 3-15 days. During this period, the patient should not consume any solid food.
During this transition period, the calorie content of consumed liquids should be considered in relation to stomach capacity. Acidic drinks, as well as spicy or sugary beverages, should be avoided. Gas-producing liquids should also be avoided.

Puree Diet After Gastric Reduction Surgery
After undergoing sleeve gastrectomy surgery, patients who have completed the initial phase face a pureed food diet in the second phase. Patients gradually transition from eliminating liquids to a diet consisting of pureed foods. This phase begins in the 3rd and 4th weeks after the operation.
The foods to be consumed are pureed using a blender or various other methods. During this period, food should be consumed gradually, and a new food should be tried each day. If a food causes excessive bloating, awareness should be raised about that food, and it should be avoided.
Foods consumed during the liquid-fed period after stomach surgery can also be included. Additionally, soft and easily digestible foods such as lightly cooked eggs, soft fruits, cheese, boneless fish, baby food, and cooked vegetables can be preferred. Important considerations include ensuring the foods are cooked using healthy methods and are pureed to a smooth consistency. Furthermore, spices and sugar should be avoided.
Solid Feeding Period
Patients who have undergone gastric reduction surgery can gradually begin eating solid foods approximately one month after the procedure. As with the pureed food phase, solid foods should be consumed in small, easily digestible bites, and chewing should be done thoroughly.
When transitioning to solid foods, priority should be given to protein-rich foods. Snacks should not be neglected, and attention should be paid to separating solid and liquid foods, adhering to a regular eating plan.
Patients who do not consume enough protein may experience problems such as muscle mass issues and hair loss. General weakness, fatigue, and fluid retention may occur, and hormonal secretions may become irregular in response to protein deficiency.
During these stages, you must follow all procedures given by your specialist. Deviating from the nutritional program can create serious problems. In case of any additional situations that may arise, you must inform your doctor and carefully follow their advice. Incorrect or incomplete information should not be applied. You should discuss all additional possibilities with your doctor before taking any action.
