What is Gastric Bypass?
In this article, we will discuss obesity treatment methods. What is Gastric Bypass? We will examine the topic.
Gastric bypass is one of the frequently used methods among obesity treatment methods. Like other methods, a large part of the stomach is cut and removed. The difference from sleeve gastrectomy is that a portion of the intestines is bypassed. The aim is to eliminate a certain amount of food from the body before absorption occurs. This allows for a feeling of fullness with less food.
Gastric bypass surgery, like other surgeries, is performed laparoscopically. The procedure is carried out through 4-5 incisions in the abdominal area. Robotic surgery is also used.
Gastric Bypass Surgery Preparation Phase
Before the surgery, a diet program is implemented by a specialist. This allows for weight loss and a reduction in liver size. The patient may also be required to stop drinking alcohol and smoking.

Who is a candidate for gastric bypass surgery?
This procedure is suitable for patients with a body mass index of 35 or higher. It is also performed on patients with type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol levels. This surgery may be considered suitable for all diseases related to obesity.
Postoperative Recovery
The hospital stay after surgery can vary between 3 and 6 days. Depending on the patient's condition, there is a possibility of staying in the intensive care unit. A catheter (tube) may be placed in the stomach for two to three days. A liquid diet is applied in the first few days. Unless permitted by your specialist, solid food consumption is not recommended.
Certain precautions can be taken to prevent conditions such as blood clots. Various drug treatments can be applied. Medication is also used to manage your pain.
Weight Loss and Success
It is possible to lose between 10 and 15 kilograms in the first month after gastric bypass surgery. It is a very effective method for losing excess weight. Compared to sleeve gastrectomy, it offers more permanent weight loss solutions. However, unlike sleeve gastrectomy, the intestines are also involved in the procedure, so the recovery process is more challenging.
